Hayley B Manning

Psychotherapist and Counsellor working in Surbiton (South West London, Surrey) in-person and online.

Contact me now to arrange your free 15-minute call (or online for those who are hard of hearing/deaf).

My specialism is in grief, loss and trauma and I support individual men and women of all ages and cultural backgrounds. I work in-person from a comfortable and private space in Surbiton, easily accessible from South-West London, Middlesex and Surrey counties. I also offer online or telephone counselling for those further afield, or who have accessibility or disability considerations.

We often seek out counselling when we are 'stuck' and we don't always know how, or have the support, to work through it.  Stress, anxiety and depression impact how we see ourselves, others and the world around us. You don't have to struggle alone, and having a professional alongside you in this can really help.

I am a UKCP accredited Humanistic Psychotherapist and Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, I am also a registered member of the BACP. I integrate Humanistic approaches, such as Person-centred, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis, with Attachment Theory and trauma-informed models to create a bespoke therapy plan for you.

Having originally come from Canada, I have now lived in London for over 20 years. I worked within the construction industry for well over a decade and a half, before deciding to retrain as a counsellor and psychotherapist.

“My depth of experience and expertise in loss is a common theme for the clients I help. Loss can cover the most obvious - death of someone close to us - but it is so much more than this. Loss of relationships, work, health, parts of ourselves - or even paths not taken (felt as regret, anger or even shame), are all a part of living life”.

Who I Work With

I work with individual men and women of all ages (18 years plus) and I enjoy working with people from different cultural backgrounds and religious/spiritual beliefs. I welcome those with disability and I am open to adapting where and how I work to meet your needs.

My depth of experience and expertise in loss is a common theme for the clients I help. Loss can cover the most obvious - death of someone close to us - but it is so much more than this. Loss of relationships, work, health, parts of ourselves - or even paths not taken (felt as regret, anger or even shame), are all a part of living life.

I have found that many of us leave little room to grieve these losses along the way, and they can build up, leaving us feeling isolated and alone, along with possible anxiety and depression.

Grief

Grief is a cluster of emotions and physical feelings, which can be disorientating, debilitating and disturbing for many people. We will work together to figure out what your loss means for you and how you can learn to live with it.

Loss

Loss can include anything, or anyone, we feel a connection to. It isn't always obvious what loss we are grieving, and it can be confusing to feel grief for something we never really had in the first place. However, this is a very real experience for many of us and it often feels like emptiness or possibly even numbness.

Trauma

One of my teachers once said, 'Not all grief contains trauma, but all trauma contains grief'. And she is right. This is why old wounds stay with us in painfully damaging ways, because the grief we hold for them has not had a chance to be acknowledged, accepted, processed and integrated.

Cancer

I have worked for the NHS at The Royal Marsden supporting cancer patients in navigating their diagnosis, treatment and recovery. A cancer diagnosis will encompasses all three areas of grief, loss and trauma. It may also trigger past traumatic experiences, which can be very upsetting and destabilising, and may even impact your treatment. I have also supported people who's friend or family member is going through cancer treatment.

Pregnancy complications

I also have experience and interest in working with pregnancy complications, including infertility, miscarriage and termination for medical reasons (TFMR). I host a podcast called Time To Talk TFMR which has reached an international audience with over 100 thousand downloads. Problems in pregnancy is another source of deep grief, loss and usually trauma. This can be complicated by lack of understanding within families, communities and society leading to your grief going unrecognised or minimised.

How I Work

I am an Integrative Practitioner, incorporating Humanistic theory from Person-centred, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis. I also use Attachment Theory and a trauma informed approach to create a bespoke therapy plan for you.

What binds all of these different theories together is the belief that you are the expert on you, that I believe in your inherent resilience and capacity for growth and that it is our therapeutic relationship which will be the basis for change.

Working with cancer patients has been deeply meaningful and life affirming. The impact left by working with these clients has helped to shape my approach to psychotherapy with humility, humanity and deep empathy.

Through my podcast and in my practice, I have been honoured to hold space for so many women, men and couples to share their moving stories of resilience despite the profound loss that fertility and pregnancy complications can bring.

Above all else, I offer a collaborative, compassionate and curiosity led approach. What brings you to counselling now? How do you want to feel instead? What might be standing in your way? We will come up with a plan together to help you work through these questions and more and we will regularly carry out reviews to see how the therapy is progressing.

15-min FREE phone call

We start with a phone call. This is for both you and me to learn a little more about each other. I can explain more about how I work and what you can expect. Once we establish the basics, we can book your initial consultation. Contact me now to arrange this call.

Initial Consultation

After we've spoken, we follow-up with a 50 minute initial consultation. This will cost £90. This a chance for me to find out more details about you, and for you to get a better sense of what working with me is like. If we both agree, we will then look at booking you in for your weekly sessions.

I offer several ways to work with me. From short-term plans to long-term, open-ended contracts. This flexible way of working gives you options to suit your needs and situation. My fees range from £80 - £90 per session, depending on the option you choose.

Short-term plans

8 weekly sessions

Choosing a 8 weekly block of sessions might be best for you if what brings you to counselling is very specific and you wish to work on this one issue. Or maybe you are unsure what you really need or want to focus on and you want to use this time to explore a few different topics.

Booking 8 weekly sessions will cost £720. Paid in two equal instalments.

16 weekly sessions

Choosing to book the 16 weekly block will give you more opportunity to explore what is causing you distress. Maybe you need to take a slower approach or sense there is a lot you have been holding for a long time and you need time to tell me more about each one.

Booking 16 weekly sessions will cost £1360. Paid in four equal instalments.

With many of my clients we work long-term or open-ended. Long-term is defined as a minimum of 6 months. For this way of working, I charge £80 per session and these are paid for monthly in advance.

I can take you through the different options in more detail during our Initial Consultation and help you choose whether a short-term plan or long-term contract would be most appropriate for you.
