Hayley B Manning

Humanistic Psychotherapist, MSc, Clinical Dip., Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, Dip. UKCP, MBACP

It takes an immense amount of courage to start counselling/psychotherapy. The fact that you are even here, reading these words, means that you know there is another way you could be feeling. I believe in your ability to grow and change, and I want to help. I work from practice rooms in Surbiton which are easily accessible to those in Kingston, Teddington, Thames Ditton, Hinchley Wood and Esher. I also offer online or telephone counselling for those further afield, or those who have accessibility or disability considerations.

With my clients I use an integrative approach, incorporating Person-Centred, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis. Having an integrative approach means I have a range of psychotherapeutic ‘tools’ that I can call on. My work is always collaborative. You and I work closely together to find out what is distressing you and how we can best alleviate this pain.

I am a UKCP accredited Humanistic Psychotherapist and Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, I am also a registered member of the BACP. Having originally come from Canada, I have now lived in London for over 20 years. I worked within the construction industry for well over a decade and a half, before deciding to retrain as a counsellor and psychotherapist.

Who I Work With

Balancing rocks

In my private practice, I see a variety of clients experiencing a range of difficulties. However, my depth of experience and expertise in loss is what binds all of my work with clients together. Loss covers the most obvious - bereavement (the death of someone close to us), but it is so much more than this.

Loss of relationships, work, health, parts of ourselves - or even paths not taken (felt as regret, anger or even shame), are all a part of living life. I have found that many of us leave little room to grieve these losses along the way, and they can build up, leaving us feeling isolated and alone, along with possible anxiety and depression.

Grief is a cluster of emotions and physical feelings, which can be disorientating, debilitating and disturbing for many people. We will work together to figure out what your loss means for you and how you can learn to live with it.

I have worked for the NHS at The Royal Marsden supporting cancer patients in navigating their diagnosis, treatment and recovery. I found this work deeply meaningful and life affirming. The impact left by working with these clients has helped to shape my approach to psychotherapy with humility, humanity and deep empathy.

I also have an interest in and experience with working with pregnancy complications, including infertility, miscarriage and termination for medical reasons (TFMR). I host a podcast called Time To Talk TFMR which has reached an international audience with over 100 thousand downloads. I am also a parent network volunteer for Antenatal Results and Choices. Problems in pregnancy is another source of deep grief and loss, and I have been honoured to hold space for so many woman, men and couples to share their moving stories of resilience and wisdom.

How I Work

From a place of compassion and empathy, I offer a warm welcome and safe environment to explore the issues that are causing you concern. We will meet at the same place, same time, every week and we can work either in-person, online or even by telephone.

Many clients contact me when they are at their lowest. Perhaps you have been feeling isolated, alone, anxious or depressed for awhile, but something has happened to highlight just how difficult life has been for you.

I want to know your story. Who are you and how do you view the world? I want to know how you make meaning of your experiences and how this impacts you right now. I use an integrative model, incorporating trauma informed thinking and attachment theory.

In the wise words of Irvine Yalom, 'It's the relationship that heals. It's the relationship that heals'. You may feel that your relationships are stuck in patterns and you don't understand how this keeps happening. Our interactions will allow me to see patterns or common themes that we can then use to inform what you may want to change. It is our therapeutic relationship which will be the basis for your healing.

Above all else, I offer a collaborative, compassionate and curiosity led approach. What brings you to counselling now? How do you want to feel instead? What might be standing in your way? We will come up with a plan together to help you work through these questions and more and we will regularly carry out reviews to see how the therapy is progressing.

Fees and Plans

01

15-min FREE phone call

We start with a phone call. This is for both you and me to learn a little more about each other. You can tell me more about what brings you here now. What is troubling you or causing pain. I can explain more about how I work and what you can expect. Once we establish the basics, we can book your initial consultation. Contact me now to arrange this call.

02

Initial Consultation

After we've spoken, we follow-up with a 50 minute initial consultation. This will cost £90. This will feel a bit like a counselling session, which gives you a really good idea of what it'll be like to share your story with me. It's also a chance for me to find out more details about you. It's quite natural to feel nervous and I will do my very best to make you feel at ease. If we both agree, we will then look at booking you in for your weekly sessions.

I offer several ways to work with me. From short-term block booking of sessions to long-term, open ended contracts. This flexible way of working gives you options to suit your needs and situation. My fees range from £80 - £90 per session, depending on the option you choose. I can take you through these different options in more detail during our Initial Consultation and help you choose the plan which would be best for you.

03

8 weekly sessions

Choosing a 8 weekly block of sessions might be best for you if what brings you to counselling is very specific and you wish to work on this one issue. Or maybe you are unsure what you really need or want to focus on and you want to use this time to explore a few different topics.

Booking 8 weekly sessions will cost £720. Paid in two equal instalments.

04

12 weekly sessions

Choosing to book the 12 weekly block will give you more opportunity to explore what is causing you distress. Maybe you need to take a slower approach or sense there is a lot you have been holding for a long time and you need time to tell me more about each one.

Booking 12 weekly sessions will cost £1020. Paid in three equal instalments.
